Blessings for Chapter 16

pobble_readsMy first and most obvious blessing is for Sootica. Without her intervention Gobbolino could not have survived. She prevents the Hurricane Mountain Witch from murdering him multiple times and eventually flies him to safety (well as safe as landing in a river could be - maybe she was able to foresee with her magic that there would be rescuers nearby?). She saves her brother even though she disapproves of his choices and motivations. She’s very clear that she doesn’t want or doesn’t feel able to have an ongoing relationship with him but she wants him to be safe and well. So a Blessing for everyone who helps others who are not like them and for everyone who makes the effort to see people they disapprove of as people first and who act for their well-being. May they also be safe and well and have others who will stand up for them and provide for their needs. May we all be able to see beyond the boundaries of our social groups and “people-like-us” and acknowledge and value everyone’s personhood.
My other, only slightly less obvious Blessing is for the Farmer. After what happened with the Brownie in the diary it would be understandable for him to be suspicious of any cat the children what to bring into their home. Particularly when it might be the same cat that was responsible for the trouble last time. He remains cautious and protective of his family but he doesn’t reject this new version of Gobbolino outright. Instead he carefully inspects the kitten for signs of dangerous magic and when he is satisfied it is safe to do so he welcomes Gobbolino into his household and family. Although it takes longer his eventual acceptance and welcome of Gobbolino is just as strong as the rest of the family’s and he is the person who makes plans for their future together, promising Gobbolino a place there for as long as

May they by fair and compassionate, may they be open to new information, May their trust be rewarded and the groups they are gatekeeping for be both safe and dynamic
