Something I really appreciated from the first session of the Harry Potter and the Sacred Text: Together in Quarantine was the idea of giving a Blessing as drawing a protective circle of light around someone. And that sometimes we can draw a proetctive circle of light around someone how we don;t approve of or don;t like in the hope of strengthening them to be/act better. (since the class i've been reading a book about blessing by John O'Donohue which is either called Benedictus or To Bless the Space Between Us depending where in the world you are... The only thing i want to suggest is that sometimes its about drawing a protective circle of darkness - anyone who has ever had eye-surgery, or any seed, will know that's sometimes what you need for healing and growth...

The Obvious (to me) Blessing in this chapter is for Grimalkin, even though she behaves badly at the end. She has said goodbye to both of her kittens. In Sootica's case that was saying goodbye to set her on the path to learning and independence but it must still be a wrench. The way that she said goodbye to Gobbolino was wrong - but even in better circumstances they would still be moving apart from each other. It must be difficult for her to understand and accept that Gobbolino doesn't want to be a witch's cat and that he doesn't have the attributes for it. (I realise now that the Expectation that I didn't think of in the main post on this chapter was Grimalkin and the Witch's expectations that their care and training if the kittens would lead them to them following in their mother's footsteps.) Maybe she is upset/angry with him about that? Maybe she blames herself? Or is she hurt by all the witches who have rejected her child? So a Blessing for Parents and Carers who's children and other loved ones are moving on and for all of us who's relationships are in transitions. May they/we find new and healthy ways of relating and new focuses and roles that give meaning and purpose.
The less obvious (again to me - they might be screamingly obvious to someone else) Blessing is for the foxes and toads who have been torn away from their old home and moved on to somewhere new that they haven't chosen for reasons that are nothing to do with them. For all people who's lives are changed by circumstances beyond their control a (which in this pandemic is all of us!) and by other people's choices may they/we find stability and may they/we be properly valued and given consideration by those who have power and influence over them/us
